Alzheimer’s disease is a slow but
continuous process affecting that portion of the brain that controls memory,
judgment, intelligence, behavior and language. It is a kind of slow but
steady form of mental decline or dementia occurring in older adults. I mean
not that it should happen to everyone reaching a certain age but only to
those unfortunate victims of the disease. However, the disease has far
reaching consequences than mere memory loss, which is quite common to
persons as they grow older, it affects the ability to think clearly. In
fact, the entire behavior pattern of the person changes – it annihilates the
personality!
Alzheimer’s and Shingles /
Neuralgia
Shingles
is a condition which is very common in elderly people, especially people
with Alzheimer’s. Shingles begins with a rash and can lead to neuralgia,
which is where the nerve endings become sensitive to touch. If symptoms of
shingles and neuralgia are noticed, one should seek treatment as soon as
possible.
Alzheimer’s – Signs & Symptoms
Signs and symptoms of
the disorder are unmistakable. Typical early symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease
include inability to use judgment and take decision; confusion about time
and date; irritation; difficulty in expressing himself or herself; acute
loss of memory; loss of comprehension and many more distressing conditions.
Unfortunately, with every passing day, the symptoms get worse. Added to the
harrowing conditions described above are added hallucinations and delusions.
When sudden fear, suspicion and mistrust are added to the cocktail, you can
well imagine the sad scenario that presents itself. But the worst comes to
surface when unexpected aggression takes a violent form that may kill the
person or who cares for him or her.
Alzheimer’s – Treatment
No. Unfortunately
there is none. No specific cure for the disease has been discovered till
today. However, much may be done to maintain quality of life and help the
sufferer to stay active. Depression is another factor to be taken care of.
Medication including Cholinesterase inhibitors or Memantine may temporarily
improve memory and thinking power. But most important is to make sure the
person is safe, and supportive care is provided. A difficult task, isn’t it?
